How to Tie a Blanket Scarf

  • October 6th, 2016    /     13 comments    /    Blog, Fall

Hi everyone!  If there is one item you need for Fall and Winter, it’s a blanket scarf!  My favorite place to get them is Nordstrom (duhhh)!  They have the largest selection I’ve seen this Season but beware they do sell out fast!  If you’ve followed me for a while you know I own way too many of them 😉  and the one question I’ve gotten asked over and over is how I tie my blanket scarves.  So I thought I would share a quick tutorial on how to tie a blanket scarf and my little trick for making it look and feel less bulky!  I’ve also included a few different ways you can wear one.

One thing you need to know is that blanket scarves are square and so this tutorial will only work on square scarves!

Before you start lay the scarf on the floor (easiest way) and fold the square into a perfect triangle!

Now here is my trick – roll the scarf down while holding it in front of you like in the picture below.  This cuts down on a lot of the “bulk” that people don’t like about blanket scarves!  I roll mine to the length that is pictured but you can play with different lengths that you like.

Then, I flip the scarf around so that the rolled part is facing me and isn’t visible!

Pull the ends up and behind your head…

Cross them like the picture below.

Pull the ends down in front (and fix your hair lol).  That’s it!!  You may need to adjust the scarf slightly but I usually don’t do much.

Another way I like to wear a blanket scarf is to start with my large triangle and roll it down even further.

Then I drape it over my shoulders similar to a cape.

This is an easy way to add a little something extra to your outfit!

Lastly, and one of my favorite ways, is to make an infinity scarf.  These are so easy and don’t require much adjusting throughout the day!

Start with the original triangle and tie the ends together like below.

Loop it around your neck twice!  Done!

The best item to pair with a blanket scarf is a tunic.  These $18 t-shirt tunics are my absolute favorite!!  I have every color and I live in them!

Below are my favorite blanket scarves and tunics from Nordstrom to get me through Fall/Winter

These 2 are already triangles!!  I have the plaid one and it’s so much less bulky!  It’s so easy to tie!

I hope you guys liked this post!  If you’re anything like me (forgetful) you should “pin” this post!!  Have a great day and thanks for stopping by!

  1. Good Evening & Happy New Year,
My name is Jerika. I am a 50yr. old wife & mother of two and I’m wanting to do my own page like yours. Also, I’d love to start a blog. I’m just not sure where to begin. Please, any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

  2. Ohhhh!!!! Thank you!!!! I bought one and loved it, til I tried to wear it, and hated how bulky it was!!! So happy for this tutorial. THANK YOU!!!! 😁

  3. Love this. I ordered the green soft sweater-ish tunic you showed yesterday, any scarf suggestions to pair with it?

  4. I love this look! Can you show us how to do this with a scarf that is rectangle? Last year I bought two blanket scarves and could never get them to look right on me and now I’m realizing it’s because they aren’t square! LOL! Any tips???
